FMK - Maier: Mobile telephone systems subject of intense research

Great Britain is also unable to find any risks to health from mobile phones

The major British research programme on mobile phone communication (MTHR- Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research) did not find any evidence of risks to health from using mobile telephones or mobile radio stations. The recently presented report deduces the following: "None of the research studies supported and published by the programme indicate a biological or negative impact on health from electromagnetic fields from mobile communication."
Professor Lawrie Challis, Chairman of the MTHR programme notes: "This is a very important report from a comprehensive research programme. All studies have been published in scientific and medical journals and the results have been peer-reviewed." At the same time, however, he adds that there is a need for more research with regard to long-term phone use by children.
The most important results from the MTHR programme in overview:
No impairment to brain function
There is no association between short-term mobile phone use and brain tumours. Examinations on human beings indicate that brain function is not affected. According to the report, this subject area is considered by the MTHR project management as having been examined conclusively.
Long-term exposure needs to be studied further
The situation with regard to long-term exposure to high-frequency electromagnetic fields in mobile telephone systems needs to be researched further, because the user group of people that have been using mobile phones for more than 10 years is still very small. As soon as next year, the MTHR experts will be starting a follow-up study: 200,000 European users of mobile phones will be examined with regard to possible long-term effects.
Cells and tissue are not affected
The results from the MTHR programme do not indicate any evidence of non-thermal effects on cells and tissue from mobile telephony. The MTHR project management also considers this subject area as having been conclusively researched.
Mobile communication fields well below threshold values
Measurements taken of mobile communication fields indicate that the electromagnetic fields are well below the internationally applicable threshold values.
