FMK: Settlement reached with Dr. Oberfeld - what now?
Who is meant to believe this research now?
"The Defendant, Dr. Gerd Oberfeld acknowledges that at no time was there a "C-Net" mobile phone station in the area of the Schemmerlstrasse automatic exchange in Hausmannstätten, Styria. The Defendant covenants to cease and desist from disseminating assertions of facts or claims of a similar nature to the effect that such a mobile phone station was located at the aforementioned place that lead to the conclusion that there is a causal relationship with multiple instances of cancerous illnesses, in particular also within the scope of his "Environmental epidemiological study into the incidence of cancer in the municipalities of Hausmannstätten & Vasoldsberg" from January 2008." This is the exact wording of the text under Point 1 of the settlement between Dr. Oberfeld and mobilkom austria dated 03/11/2008.
"Everything else is pure interpretation carried out by Dr. Oberfeld. Understandably, Dr. Oberfeld is now trying to save face. But the truth is that there never was a C-Net station in Hausmannstätten, so the study is therefore erroneous and irrelevant", says FMK managing director Maximilian Maier.
The following questions now arise with respect to the further research activities announced by Dr. Oberfeld:
1. Who still believes Dr. Oberfeld and his results?
2. Who is paying for Dr. Oberfeld's further research work?
3. What measures are to be taken to restore the reputation of the Austrian scientific community?
4. How is it possible to ensure that unprejudiced research is conducted in future?
Potential future sponsors must find answers to these questions if they do not wish see their money thrown out the window.
