FMK-Barmüller: Base Station Register for Public Mobile Communications Networks Being Prepared

Voluntary Industry Initiative to Inform the Public Slated to Begin October 2003

"To meet the growing demand for information from some parts of the population, the operators of public mobile communications networks have jointly decided to publish site data for existing mobile communications facilities on the Internet. Organizational preparation has already been through FMK. The information is to be presented to the public in October 2003, or at the very latest by the end of the year," said the managing director of the Forum Mobilkommunikation (FMK) Thomas Barmüller, explaining this voluntary initiative by the mobile network operators. "By taking this step, the industry hopes to inform the public of the infrastructure necessary for mobile communication. This should also do away with the continually resurfacing unfounded fear of this modern communications technology. The registry will also help make it easier for mobile service providers to find locations that can be used by multiple operators," continues Barmüller.

The information to be offered will include all mast and rooftop locations for the transmission facilities of all public mobile network operators, including both GSM as well as UMTS antennas. The individual locations will be represented as interactive points on a combined survey map; a three-level zoom function will allow a more detailed view. The base station register will also provide information on the maximum technically possible transmission powers of the facilities listed. At locations where multiple mobile communications applications are installed, their transmission powers are combined. The transmission powers listed therefore represent maximum values, which are only reached briefly in actual use, if at all.

The Forum Mobilkommunikation (FMK) is an industry-wide initiative of all Austrian mobile service providers, the mobile communications industry, and the Association of the Austrian Electrical and Electronics Industry (FEEI). It focuses on the subject of "mobile communication and health," as well as on all questions relating to the establishment of Austria's mobile communications networks.
